Transonic and supersonic ground effect aerodynamics
نویسنده
چکیده
A review of recent and historical work in the field of transonic and supersonic ground effect aerodynamics has been conducted, focussing on applied research on wings and aircraft, present and future ground transportation, projectiles, rocket sleds and other related bodies which travel in close ground proximity in the compressible regime. Methods for ground testing are described and evaluated, noting that wind tunnel testing is best performed with a symmetry model in the absence of a moving ground; sled or rail testing is ultimately preferable, though considerably more expensive. Findings are reported on shock-related ground influence on aerodynamic forces and moments in and accelerating through the transonic regime – where force reversals and the early onset of local supersonic flow is prevalent – as well as more predictable behaviours in fully supersonic to hypersonic ground effect flows.

The potential positive effects of ground proximity on the aerodynamic performance of a \Ving or aerofoil have long been established, but at transonic speeds the fonnation of shock waves betvveen the body and the ground plane would have significant consequences. متن کاملTransonic Potential Flows in A Convergent–Divergent Approximate Nozzle
In this paper we prove existence, uniqueness and regularity of certain perturbed (subsonic–supersonic) transonic potential flows in a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold with “convergent–divergent” metric, which is an approximate model of the de Laval nozzle in aerodynamics. The result indicates that transonic flows obtained by quasi-one-dimensional flow model in fluid dynamics are stable with ...
متن کاملTransonic and Supersonic Overtaking of a Projectile Preceding a Shock Wave
In this paper, two-dimensional and axisymmetric, time dependent transonic and supersonic flows over a projectile overtaking a moving shock wave are considered. The flow is simulated numerically by solving full time averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The equations are linearized by Newton approach. The roe’s flux splitting method, second order central difference scheme for the diffusion terms, an...
متن کاملAerodynamics of a highly irregular body at transonic speeds—Analysis of STRATOS flight data
In this paper, we analyze the trajectory and body attitude data of Felix Baumgartner's supersonic free fall through the atmosphere on October 14, 2012. As one of us (UW) was scientific advisor to the Red Bull Stratos team, the analysis is based on true body data (body mass, wetted pressure suit surface area) and actual atmospheric data from weather balloon measurements. We also present a fully ...
متن کاملAdaptation of Structured Grid for Supersonic and Transonic Flows
Two distinct redistribution grids - adaptation techniques, spring analogy and elliptic grid generator are applied to two-dimensional steady, inviscid, shocked flows, and the ability of each technique is examined and compared. Euler equations are solved base on Roe's Reimann solver approach to simulate supersonic flow around a sphere, transonic flow about an airfoil and supersonic flow in a symm...
